In this 20 hour course we will delve into the Sanskrit alphabet to learn its sacred sounds. The Sanskrit language has been called 'the language of the Gods' by the great saints and sages of the Indian subcontinent, and is the very cornerstone of our yoga heritage as we know it today. We will explore the sacred text, The Bhagavad Gita, and while learning its elegant and powerful message we will have a chance to practice chanting in the original Sanskrit!

Early Morning Musings by Marci

What a beautiful feeling, to wake up before the sun, with the stars still glittering above, and get silently ready to start the day with a yoga class.

The time between 4 and 6 am is called Brahmamuhurta in Sanskrit, a spiritually charged time of day extremely favourable for meditation. Even if you don't actually sit to meditate, just being awake and aware, with a positive intention, is very beneficial. To be on your way to a yoga class is even better, walking quiet streets in the fresh morning air.

The Yoga Sanctuary offers early morning classes at both locations. At Danforth and Broadview there is a daily 6:45 to 8:00 am class, Monday to Friday. Monday’s class is Hatha I, suitable for beginners or anyone wanting a fairly gentle and relaxing warm-up into their week. The rest of the week is Vinyasa class, starting the day off with a vigorous flow of movement and breath. Although maybe not quite as vigorous as some other Vinyasa classes; it is first thing in the morning after all! And the last Wednesday of each month is a Restorative class.

At College and Yonge we offer 7:00 to 9:30 am Mysore classes Wednesday and Friday, and 8:00 to 10:15 on Sunday, in which students practice on their own and a senior teacher is available to provide advice, assistance and support. A wonderful way to develop a home practice or work on specific areas of difficulty. The College location is also offering two new 8-week pre-registered early morning series: Ashtanga I/II on Tuesdays and Vinyasa on Thursdays, both from 6:45 to 8:00 am.

Though I still sometimes glare balefully at my alarm clock for waking me up so very early, more and more often I thank it for reminding me that I feel fantastic on the days when I do get up and go to class before doing anything else. Whether teaching or practicing, I'm always more calm and invigorated, happy and relaxed, when I start the day with yoga. As a friend of mine pointed out when I whined a bit about such early hours, the self-discipline is not in getting up early, but in going to bed early enough.

So good morning, starshine. (And if you love that happy song, there is a beautiful version of it on Serena Ryder’s new CD, “If Your Memory Serves You Well”.) Hope to see you at class one of these mornings.

Namaste,
Marci Burgess
